UNILORIN: SCHOOL MANAGEMENT CONSIDER CLAUSES TO REDUCE TUITION FEES

SCHOOL MANAGEMENT CONSIDER CLAUSES TO REDUCE TUITION FEES.

The management of the University of Ilorin has mutually agreed to reduce the controversial increment in the tuition fees to a more bearable, beneficial and affordable rate, following hours of austere negotiations with students\’ representatives at different levels on campus.

The Student Union officials, Faculty Presidents and members of the Union Campus Journalist (UCJ) today met with the School Management, in response to the ponderous grievances shown by the students over the recent hike in tuition fees.

It would be recalled that the school management had on Saturday 3rd of November, 2018 come up with a new tuition fees which skyrocketed with about 117.7% increment that immediately generated series of complaints and tensions amongst the students on social media platforms.

In their submission, the school management affirmed that there\’s no hike in school fees as irresistibly claimed by the students, stressing that the school is not charging the students for a particular school fee but rather University charges which was unavoidably increased as a result of costly maintenance of infrastructural facilities on campus.

They noted that the school fees have been continually stable for about 10 years, but when the need to ameliorate old facilities that had been existence for long arises, the school management thus decided to upgrade to a level of recognised academic excellence.

However, contrary to claims that the tuition fees was increased by 117.7%  the school management stated that the 48.8% increment which was implemented has taken care of the Bandwidth and utilities charges making the new University charges to be N23,000 compare to the N15,700 charged in the previous years.

In his statement, the Student Union President Oluseyi Animashaun suggested that the 48.4% increment should reduced to 5% considering the epileptic status of the nation\’s economic, but was immediately rejected, as 15% proposal of the Faculty Presidents was also declined.

It was also made known that some faculties\’ charges still remain untouched but however faculties which discovered increment in charges should send their Executives to meet with their Deans and iron things out amicably.

The Student Union therefore urged students to be calm and maintain their good reputations, while patiently awaiting favorable reduction from 48.4% to a more bearable and affordable rate.

The meeting had in attendance, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Professor (Mrs) Malomo, DVC Management, Professor B.T Suleimon; The school Bursar, Mr Sunde; the Director of Corporate Affairs Commission, Mr Kunle Akogun alongside Professor (Mrs) Oladosu who represented the University registrar at the gathering.

In a related development, the school management have enjoined students to go on with their normal activities and allow peace to reign as before.

They appreciated the students for being responsible enough and not allowing external forces or detractors to use them in destabilizing our common heritage of peaceful atmosphere to the benefits of all.
